Refresh Rate Limitations

Users desire higher refresh rates (120Hz+) on high-resolution displays, finding 60Hz insufficient.

Users are frustrated by the 60Hz refresh rate on high-resolution displays, particularly when they are accustomed to higher refresh rates on other devices. They find 60Hz to be slow and choppy, impacting their user experience, especially for tasks like video editing or general scrolling.

Quotes

I'm having a hard time finding a 27" 5k display right now.

Yeah it needs to be SOMEWHAT competitive like make it 32" or make it have a high refresh rate, or something... But to be just 27" at 60hz its a fortune.

Its only 60hz? Damn glad i read this, pass for me

Same, 60Hz seems slow for me

When every other display i have is 120hz+ there’s no way id buy anything less.

I work in video editing, I’ve worked on 60Hz displays for 7 years, after I made the switch to 120Hz, 60Hz seems very slow and choppy in comparison I can never go back even if I had to use a lower resolution

im okay with 27” but the 60hz refresh rate is what made me stay away

The only issue I have with it is the refresh rate, I simply can't go back after using 120hz+ displays even if they are lower res / worse colors / worse speakers

60 to 120hz is incredibly noticeable to me.

Connectivity and Compatibility Issues

Difficulty connecting non-Apple devices to the Studio Display due to specific cable requirements.

Users are experiencing significant difficulties in getting the Apple Studio Display to work with non-Apple devices, often requiring specific, high-bandwidth USB-C cables beyond what is typically included or readily available. The included Apple cables do not always work with Windows laptops, leading to extensive troubleshooting.

Quotes

Can you post which cable worked for you? I just received the display and none of my cables are working with Studio Display + RTX 2080

Yes I purchase a USB4 40Gbps cable from Amazon and it worked perfectly.

Could you please share an amazon link? The weird thing in my case is that I tried to use TB4 cable that comes with Studio Display and audio works, but I don’t see anything on the screen.

The unobvious part is that the apple-supplied cable may not work, but a different cable might . my Apple supplied thunderbolt cable works for connecting a MacBook Pro or iPad Air5 to the ASD. but does not work to connect a Windows laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad) thunderbolt port to the Apple studio display. so the difference is more subtle than just displayport over USBC or not, or thunderbolt or not My windows laptop needs a different cable.

So after 4 hours of research and I was about to give up, and I came across this thread. And on the LAST comment, wow I’ve found it. It’s like finding water after 3 days of walking in the dessert. I can’t fucking believe it, the cable that I had all along, that I used for charging my iPad worked with my retarded thinkpad. But every other cable including the one that came with the apple display DOES not work.

I have a sneaking suspicion the cable is running above rated speed and I am losing some colour depth. I can notice some Colour issues.

You need USB-C on the host device, that can also provide DP signal I think… I was in luck because I have a USB-C on my GPU that has both data and display so to speak.

I bought the [Insignia USB C over DisplayPort cord](https://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-6-usb-c-to-displayport-cable-white/6419149.p?skuId=6419149&ref=212&loc=1&extStoreId=1130&ref=212&loc=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwoduRBhA4EiwACL5RP_hY4heZLiWQZegh8X740zM4DYFdTQR_tdjBGYDXsO4UcvBXOH4a6RoCSYIQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) today, and that unfortunately didn’t work either.

Price and Value Perception

The high price of the Studio Display is a major deterrent, with users questioning its value compared to alternatives.

The high cost of the Apple Studio Display is a significant barrier for many users, who feel it is overpriced, especially given its 60Hz refresh rate and technical specifications compared to alternatives. Despite this, some users find its aesthetic and integration with macOS compelling enough to consider it despite the cost.

Yeah it needs to be SOMEWHAT competitive like make it 32" or make it have a high refresh rate, or something... But to be just 27" at 60hz its a fortune.

Yes, it is a bit expensive for my budget, but should I still buy the Apple Studio Display?

There's nothing exactly like it: especially if you care about your monitor's aesthetics, I think you'll likely be happy with it. It's overpriced and has several features you probably wouldn't use

I have to say Im probably not going to use it extensively, it’s just for the occasional home office (with a windows laptop or remote into one) and light gaming. That being said, there is nothing wrong with the studio display, I just don’t want to spend 1.5k for something that gets used for max. 12h a week.

I haven't done it yet, but I will do it even though it's too expensive for me.

I'm having the same dilemma. I have 2 1080p monitors that I want to upgrade. Studio display is too expensive and for me.

I’m having such a hard time Justifying a LCD IPS screen with 60hz(very low) for $1500+.

I bought this one refurbished for $1359. The LCD panel and 60hz are obviously not impressive technically but it is perfect for my work as a designer when it comes to color accuracy and resolution.

Studio Display should be priced no more than 999$.

I was almost tempted. They're on sale now.

I've been really tempted. I want to order one without a stand (VESA mount) and a Monitor arm for my desk. It would be a downgrade for me (currently have a DELL 43inch monitor)

Color Accuracy and Text Readability

Users seek high color accuracy and excellent text readability, often finding other monitors lacking in these aspects.

Users prioritize high color accuracy and sharp text readability, often finding that other monitors fail to meet these standards, especially within the macOS ecosystem. The Studio Display is frequently cited as a solution for these needs, despite its other drawbacks.

Quotes

I really want to get a Studio Display just for the colors itself. I feel every monitor i try the color is off somehow, no matter what settings/profiles I play with, no matter what model monitor, no matter manufacture. I feel Apple’s would be most accurate (I’m not sure)

ignorance is bliss regarding color accuracy when buying monitors, because i don't think a single manufacturer cares about it if they don't specifically market it

I don’t know why you’re so downvoted, but you’re absolutely right, at least if we’re talking about macOS here. Due to the way macOS handles resolution scaling all text on 4K displays will be downscaled and have an ever so slight blur unless you do a “looks like” 1080 but then things will be way to large or you run it natively at 4K but then everything will be too small. 5K is the perfect resolution for a “looks like” 1440p which will give perfect text and is no surprise why Apple jumped right to the 5k iMac.

First of all, I want a REALLY high-quality display that does not kill my eyesight, and secondly, I want to use my monitor for a long time

After seeing the Studio display right next to a couple of top of the range Dell displays, I bought the studio display. There’s barely any comparison for clarity of text etc (which I need as I run a lot of high powered office apps on it).

I have lazy eyes. After I got my iMac 2015. I couldn't go back to any other monitor at all. Even with 2/4k TV, they still look a little fake with colors. However, Apple 4.5K feels much more natural to me with the color and resolution.

I haven't done it yet, but I will do it even though it's too expensive for me. Because after a lot of research, I realized that Studio Display is the best choice for full compatibility with MacOS and especially for text readability.

The LCD panel and 60hz are obviously not impressive technically but it is perfect for my work as a designer when it comes to color accuracy and resolution.

The color accuracy on this is amazing too, close to what you would get to an old display.

I have the same monitor and when I got it it could not display red, check the vga cable and make sure the green pin isn't touching one of the many ground pins, I had my red touching ground and just had to starighten it out and it's fine now.

Feature Set and Expectations

Users debate the value of integrated features like speakers and webcam, and the lack of advanced features like 120Hz or HDR.

Users are divided on the value of the Studio Display's integrated features like speakers and webcam, with some finding them useful and others considering them unnecessary given the price. There's also a desire for higher refresh rates and advanced features like HDR and ProMotion, which are currently absent.

I saw this in store. It's really beautiful to look at. I'm okay with the price if it had 120Hz.

Well… There aren’t any 5k 120hz monitors. BUT. There’s a badder boy in town. The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 57” double 4k mini led monitor (16.588 million pixels!) running at 240hz..

I feel like everybody that says this forgets it’s 5K, has solid speakers and a webcam. I haven’t seen any other monitor come close in terms of crispy-ness.

I’ve been eyeing the Pro Art 27 as it’s the same 5k and “native” Mac resolution. At $800 it lacks the following: - brightness control from the keyboard. - uniform brightness compared to ASD - speakers (I don’t mind) - webcam (I don’t mind)

the main differentiator at this point for me is the studio display isn't plastic no webcam is a dealbreaker is also a big minus

Who honestly uses monitor speakers in 2024?

It’s comical when people say “plastic”. When tf do you look at the back of your monitor? I also didn’t realize people still used speakers on a monitor. I’ll always default to some sort of headset. So 2x price for some upgraded material you never look as well as speakers and a “okay” webcam? Smh

I was almost tempted. They're on sale now. I've been really tempted. I want to order one without a stand (VESA mount) and a Monitor arm for my desk.

I have been wanting the studio display for some time now. Did you pick it up with the glossy screen or the etched glass anti reflective? I am somewhat hesitant to buy as I am afraid Apple could refresh the display first half of next year… but also Apple doesn’t refreshed displays often. The only reason I feel this way is with the inclusion of thunderbolt 5 with M4 pro and max… Next likely refresh will be the Mac Studio. Will they refresh the SD with promotion and HDR in 5k with the increased bandwidth of TB5?

Color Cast Issues

A user is experiencing a purple hue on their CRT monitor, suspecting cable or internal component issues.

A user is facing a persistent purple color cast on a CRT monitor, which they suspect is due to a faulty cable connection or a failing internal component, specifically the green electron gun.

Quotes

Hello. I just recently picked up an Apple Studio Display CRT monitor someone was getting rid of, and everything has a pruple hue to it. In the screenshot, this webpage is supposed to be white, but it looks purple. Any ideas as to how I can fix it? I've tried the color adjustments in the menu.

i don't know anything about that display but normally what you are seeing is related to cable.

It could also be the green gun or it's related circuitry has given up the ghost

If it's missing green altogether, then the monitor probably needs repairs, hopefully it isn't an unfixable problem with the picture tube itself.

No green? Kinda hard to tell from this though. Could you pull up some colour bars or something?

green gun seems to be dead, no green bar on the ebay logo

It's either really simple or impossible. Good luck!
